Honouring Our Roots In Our Own Way
As we celebrated the Year of the Snake, I found myself reflecting on the meaning of tradition—what we keep, what we blend, and how we pass it on. Making dumplings and nian gao (rice cake) with my children brought back childhood memories and a deeper appreciation for the stories carried through food. It reminded me that traditions aren’t about perfection but about connection.
Watching Kim’s Convenience reinforced this idea, highlighting the challenges of immigrant families navigating generational and cultural shifts. With my parents gone, it’s up to me to carry forward these traditions, even as I question whether I’m “doing it right.”
Blending Traditions, Creating Something New
Marrying into a French family has shown me the beauty of blending cultures—Lunar New Year’s dumplings meet Galette des Rois, and long, leisurely meals become a shared ritual. It’s proof that traditions evolve, shaped by the people we share them with.
Our Roots as a Source of Strength
Honouring where we come from isn’t about following every tradition to the letter—it’s about finding meaning in the parts that resonate. Whether through food, language, or stories, reconnecting with our roots can offer comfort, identity, and a sense of belonging.
